Training Program

INITIAL TRAINING
Whether you’re interested in basic obedience, or competing at the national level, each dog begins the program in the same manner. We work to:
• familiarize him with the new kennel environment
• emphasize basic obedience
• encourage his natural retrieving instinct
• begin the electronic collar-conditioning program

The dogs are introduced to guns, decoys, boats, as well as a variety of game birds.
As his steadiness improves, the dog will begin to work off-lead. He will be exposed to marked retrieves on both land and water on a daily basis and will be taught the fundamental drills of blind retrieves (handling).

INTERMEDIATE
In this phase of the program, the dog progresses to multiple marked retrieves and is introduced to hidden and retired guns. The handling drills increase in difficulty, leading up to cold blinds. At the end of this stage, the dog should be able to run marks and blinds in the same setup, as well as honor another working dog. At this point, your dog is ready for upland and/or waterfowl hunting. If you desire, your dog can be taught to quarter for upland hunting at this time.

ADVANCED
This phase of the program is highly individualized in terms of the dog's abilities and your desires. The dogs in this phase are competent enough to compete in field trials and upper level hunt test competitions.
